Villasimius and Sarrabus

Villasimius e Sarrabus THE SOUTHEASTERN COAST

Departing from Cagliari you can follow the road along the Poetto beach.
The route goes through the strip of land, included between the sea and the Quartu ponds, inhabited by rosa flamingos colonies and in part used as salines. Then you continue towards the sea.
It is a succeeding of small residential centres. After about 10 Km, in direction of Villasimius, the coast bcomes rocky and the road takes up and down in hairpins.
The sea is marvellous in summer. At 37 Km there is Solanas, a small tourist centre.



Villasimius e Sarrabus VILLASIMIUS
After Solanas the road climbs in correspondence of Capo Boi and the view becomes splendid from the high over the coast. It arrives, always coasting the sea, at Villasimius. The town is on the northern margin of a promontory that extends to Capo Carbonara. On both sides there are white beaches and grey granite rocks polished by the sea. Crossed Villasimius, a small tourist port dominated by a seventeenth century castle, we arrive at a panoramic terrace dominating Cavoli island.

Today Villasimius is a very poular summer vacation centre. There is everything you want: a splendid sea, camping sites and hotels, the opportunity to practice different sports, countless bars and discos. In July there is an important festival with exhibitions and a handicraft fair. A procession by boat arrives at the point where the beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary had been found in the sea - you can reach it also by a short swim just along the port.

COSTA REI
Leavung Villasimius we take the road along the coast in direction to Costa Rei. It climbes on steep hairpins with attractive views on the profile of Serpentara island. Along the coast to Capo Ferrato many caves with beauty beaches wait for tourists. In the centre there are the famous sandy dunes of Costa Rei, with a particular clear sea and golden sand.

CASTIADAS
A deviation takes to the small Castiadas centre, today a region rich in citrus orchards. Castiadas is a small fraction of Muravera, once ethere was a complex of nineteenth-century prisons that still today have a certain glamour.

MURAVERA
Cross the plain of Castiadas til you reach the small suburb of San Priamo; enjoy the sea view, the lagoon delimited by ponds bordered by dunes with charmy sandy beaches. Arriving at Muravera, a big town grown at the feet of the Sarrabus in the Flumendosa floody plain.

SAN VITO
Before arriving in the town, a road in good conditions carries to the left silver mines of Narba Mountain. Who is interested in mineralogy can find near the torrent rocks of various metals. At the beginning of the road for Narba mountain, you see some domus de janas. San Vito is the homeland of launeddas, an ancient musical tool composed by supported pipes that produce a sound like that of the bagpipe.

QUIRRA
A bridge surpasses Flumendosa, lost in a sea of pipes. Surpassed the town of Villaputzu, you reach the Porto Corallo sea. After ten Km you arrive at Quirra, the province boundary of Cagliari. Here there is the small church of San Nicoḷ of Quirra, in Romanic style of the XIII century influenced by Pisan models, unique in Sardinia, built in brick and not in stone. There is also the castle of Quirra, built by the Cagliari judges, to defend their kingdom.

SARRABUS MOUNTAINS
The road climbs following the profile of the mountains for more of 20 Km. It is a succeeding of curves, but enjoy these hills with the green Mediterranean patch and the lollipops forests, the rosa and grey colours of the granite. Here it is possible to have very interesting trips in the Seven Brothers' mountains. Have a nice walk in the middle of the isolated forests populated only by deer and different species of predatories. Continuing the journey you arrive at Campidano, returning to Cagliari.
